Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI)

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is the independent regulator of the telecommunications business in India. TRAI's mission is to create and nurture conditions for growth of telecommunications in the country in a manner and at a pace which will enable India to play a leading role in emerging global information society.

One of the main objectives of TRAI is to provide a fair and transparent policy environment which promotes a level playing field and facilitates fair competition.

Department of Telecommunications

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is part of the Ministry of Communications & Information Technology in the executive branch of the Government of India.

The DoT has been formulating developmental policies for the accelerated growth of the telecommunication services. The Department is also responsible for grant of licenses for various telecom services like Unified Access Service Internet and VSAT service. The Department is also responsible for frequency management in the field of radio communication in close coordination with the international bodies. It also enforces wireless regulatory measures by monitoring wireless transmission of all users in the country and promote private investments in the Indian telecommunication industry.

Wireless Planning & Coordination Wing

The Wireless Planning and Coordination Wing (WPC) is a branch of the Ministry of Communications & Information Technology of the Government of India.

It is the National Radio Regulatory Authority responsible for Frequency Spectrum Management (FSM), including licensing and caters for the needs of all wireless users (Government and Private) in the country. It exercises the statutory functions of the Central Government and issues licenses to establish, maintain and operate wireless stations.

WPC is divided into major sections like Licensing and Regulation (LR), New Technology Group (NTG) and Standing Advisory Committee on Radio Frequency Allocation (SACFA).

Telecom Centres of Excellence

Telecom Centres of Excellence (TCOEs), a PPP Initiative conceptualized in May 2007 and brought into existence by February 2008 with the signing of 7 MOUs between DoT, participating premier Academic Institutes and the sponsors from the Telecom Industry.
The idea of Telecom Centres of Excellence (TCOEs) germinated with the shared realization, by the Government and the Telecom Industry, that a high growth trajectory of tele-communications was essential for the overall progress of the country.

TSDSI(Telecommunications Standards Development Society, India)

TSDSI(Telecommunications Standards Development Society, India) is an SDO that aims at developing and promoting India specific requirements, standardizing solutions for meeting these requirements and contributing these to international standards contributing to global standardization in the field of telecommunications  maintaining the technical standards and other deliverables of the organization, safe-guarding the related IPR, helping create manufacturing expertise in the country, providing leadership to the developing countries (such as in South Asia, South East Asia, Africa, Middle East, etc.) in terms of their telecommunications-related standardization needs.

GSM Association

The GSM Association (GSMA) represents the interests of mobile operators worldwide. Spanning over more than 220 countries, the GSMA unites nearly 800 of the world’s mobile operators, as well as more than 200 companies in the broader mobile ecosystem.
The GSMA also produces industry-leading events such as the Mobile World Congress and Mobile Asia Expo.

Telecommunication Engineering Centre

Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC) is a technical body representing the interest of Department Of Tele-communication Government of India. TEC is responsible for drawing up of standards, generic, interface, service requirements and specifications for telecom products, services and networks.

TEC funds and encourage research and development (R&D) in telecommunication in public and private sectors as well as educational institutions to make India R&D hub in this region. It also provides certification to drive indigenization and manufacturing take-off in India.
